What are Multi-Meg Fibre Optic Lines?Multi-Meg fibre optic technology, optical fibre networks, use tiny semiconductor lasers to transmit large amounts of digital information. This digital information (i.e. telecommunication services, various types of internet traffic... ), is transmitted via light pulses down hair thin optical fibre lines at speeds more than one thousand times faster than normal copper wire technology.
In order to specify speeds, fiber optic circuits are broken down into sets or multiples of signal rates. The base rate for an OC-1 is 51.84 Mbps. Certain multiples of this base rate are shown below with bandwidth amounts. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) makes use of some of these Optical Carrier levels. |
