What is a T-1?

A T-1, or a DS1 line, is the standard for businesses seeking mission critical Internet connectivity. A T-1 line transfers data between two points at 1.544 Mbps symmetrically, and is ideal for customers who need a high-speed connectivity to the Internet or as one link in their virtual or real private network. A T1 connection provides roughly 60 times more data than a normal residential modem. It is also extremely reliable and can generally handle quite a few network users at one time. Most small Internet providers have a T1 (or a fractional T1) line as their connection to the Internet. In addition, a T1 connection is a dedicated link which is up 24 hours a day.

A T1 line can carry 24 digitized voice channels, or it can carry data at a rate of 1.544 megabits per second transfer speed. If the T1 line is being used for telephone conversations, it plugs into the office's phone system. If it is carrying data it plugs into the network's router.
